A response deepens when it moves from what happens to how the text works and what the pattern may mean.

Learning goal

Distinguish retelling from explanation of craft and from evidence-based interpretation.

How to read this model

  1. Identify what is merely retold.
  2. Add the textual choice or pattern.
  3. Explain its function.
  4. Make the larger inference conditional on evidence.

Steps in the model

  • Summary – The character waits outside the house.
  • Analysis – Repeated pauses and blocked entrances slow the scene and emphasize hesitation.
  • Interpretation – The threshold can therefore stage uncertainty about whether the character belongs inside.

Explanation

Summary is useful for minimal context, but it does not explain textual construction.

Analysis and interpretation often overlap in strong writing; the gradient shows increasing inferential depth, not three rigid boxes.

Examples

  • Diagnostic question: does the sentence explain HOW or WHY?
  • Interpretation must remain anchored to the evidence already analysed.

For the exam

Highlight sentences that only retell plot. Convert the most important ones into how/why analysis.
