Learning goal

Track how a recurring detail can change meaning or sustain competing meanings across a text.

How to read this model

  1. Build an appearance timeline.
  2. Record literal function each time.
  3. Mark changes and contrasts.
  4. Test two readings against all appearances.

Steps in the model

  • Appearance 1 – Object joins two people.
  • Appearance 2 – The same object marks a boundary.
  • Appearance 3 – It is cut, hidden or redistributed.
  • Reading A – Connection and continuity.
  • Reading B – Separation and control.

Explanation

Polysemy means a detail can sustain more than one related meaning.

Transformation gives evidence for an interpretive trajectory: meaning may become more complex as the object's use changes.

Examples

  • A bridge can repeatedly host both reunion and separation.
  • Competing meanings are useful when both explain the recurrence rather than ignoring contrary evidence.

For the exam

Use changing treatment of the same detail as evidence for development in theme or relationship.
