In an increasingly globalised world, international travel has become more accessible than ever. As people visit countries with different customs, traditions, and social norms, a debate emerges: should travellers adapt to the local culture, or should host societies accept cultural diversity among visitors? Some argue that respecting local customs is essential for harmony and cultural preservation, while others believe travellers should have the freedom to maintain their own identity. This essay will discuss both views before arguing that adapting to local practices is necessary to a large extent, although flexibility is sometimes required.
Reasons travellers should adapt to local customs
One strong argument for adapting to local culture is the importance of showing respect. When visiting another country, travellers are guests in someone else’s home. Just as guests follow the rules of a house they visit, tourists should follow cultural expectations. Behaviours considered normal in one country may be seen as rude or offensive in another. For example, wearing revealing clothing near religious sites, refusing traditional greetings, or violating local etiquette can upset local communities.
