Young people around the world are increasingly at the forefront of the fight against global warming. While they are among the least responsible for the emissions driving climate change, they are likely to bear the brunt of its long-term consequences. Rising temperatures, extreme weather events, food and water insecurity, and social disruption threaten the future of today’s youth. In response, young people have been stepping up—protesting, innovating, educating, and leading movements for climate justice. This essay explores the crucial role of young people in combating global warming, examining the ways in which they can take action, the impact of their involvement, and the structural support needed to empower their efforts.
Raising Awareness and Demanding Accountability
One of the most powerful tools young people possess is their voice. Through activism and public advocacy, youth have drawn global attention to the urgency of climate change. Greta Thunberg’s “Fridays for Future” movement inspired millions of students to strike from school and demand that governments take meaningful climate action. Similar movements have emerged worldwide, uniting young people around a common cause.
