Why Listening Skills Matter
Listening is often the most underestimated language skill, yet it is fundamental to communication. In VGS English, you may encounter listening tasks involving speeches, interviews, podcasts, news reports, and film clips. Strong listening skills also help you participate more effectively in discussions and understand English outside the classroom.
In fact, listening is the primary way we acquire language. Think about how a baby learns to speak – not by reading textbooks, but by listening to the world around them for months. This is what linguists call "comprehensible input". The more you listen to English that you mostly understand, the more your brain absorbs grammar, vocabulary, and rhythm naturally. This is why just watching a series on Netflix in English or listening to English-language music can be a powerful learning tool, even when you are not actively "studying". Listening builds the foundation upon which your speaking and writing skills can grow.
