Challenges – Personal and Global

Modern life includes global crises and personal pressure. In English exams, you should connect systems-level causes with individual consequences.

Core knowledge

  • Global: climate change, inequality, conflict, migration, disinformation
  • Personal: identity pressure, mental health, uncertainty, social media impact
  • Technology creates both opportunities and risks

Exam tips

  • Use problem → causes → consequences → solutions structure.
  • Include one concrete example per paragraph.
  • Use modal verbs for nuance: may, might, could, should.
  • End with a realistic action plan.

  • Problem: Increasing rates of anxiety and depression among teenagers are linked to social media use.
  • Causes: This is driven by factors like algorithmic amplification of idealised content, social comparison, and fear of missing out (FOMO).
  • Consequences: The individual consequences include lower self-esteem and sleep deprivation, while societal consequences may involve a more polarised and less empathetic public discourse.
  • Solutions: Potential solutions could involve digital literacy education in schools, platform regulation by governments, and individual strategies like curated feeds and "digital detox" periods.

Academic Deep-Dive

To write at a high academic level, move from description to analysis. That means you should explain why an example matters, how it connects to the theme, and what broader consequences it may have for individuals, communities, or policy.

Vanlig feil: Å beskrive i stedet for å analysere

  • Beskrivelse (svakt): "Many teenagers use Instagram. They spend several hours a day scrolling through pictures of celebrities and influencers."
  • Analyse (sterkt): "The constant exposure to curated and often unattainable lifestyles on platforms like Instagram may contribute to a culture of social comparison, where teenagers' self-worth can become problematically tied to external validation like 'likes' and comments."

Merk hvordan den analytiske setningen bruker modale verb (may, can) for å vise nyanse og forklarer hvorfor bruken av Instagram er relevant for temaet (mental helse, identitetspress).

Worked example paragraph model

Point: State your main claim clearly. Evidence: Add a concrete real-world case, text reference, statistic, or historical detail. Analysis: Explain significance and evaluate implications. Link: Connect directly back to the task question.

"Social media is a big problem for young people today. They see perfect pictures online and feel bad about themselves. For example, many people look at influencers on Instagram and want to be like them. This gives them bad mental health. It is important that we do something about this problem."

" (Point) One of the most significant personal challenges emerging from the digital age is the erosion of self-esteem driven by the curated realities on social media platforms. (Evidence) A 2019 study by the Royal Society for Public Health in the UK, for instance, found that Instagram was the most detrimental social networking app for young people's mental health, linking it to high levels of anxiety and depression. (Analysis) This suggests that the algorithmic promotion of polished, unrealistic images of success and beauty creates a constant, subconscious benchmark against which users measure their own lives. The discrepancy between this digital facade and lived reality can foster a chronic sense of inadequacy and social anxiety. This is not merely a personal failing, but a systemic issue embedded in the business model of these platforms, which profit from sustained user engagement. (Link) Therefore, addressing mental health challenges in the 21st century requires a critical look at the very architecture of our digital social spaces. "

Kommentar: Dette avsnittet følger P.E.A.L.-modellen.

Stronger academic language

  • Cause and effect: therefore, consequently, as a result
  • Contrast: however, nevertheless, in contrast, whereas
  • Evaluation: this suggests, this indicates, this can be interpreted as
  • Nuance: to some extent, in many contexts, from a long-term perspective

" Many proponents of social media argue that it fosters global connectivity and provides a platform for marginalised voices ; however, critics contend that these benefits are overshadowed by the platforms' role in spreading disinformation and exacerbating political polarisation. "

Fargekode: Standpunkt 1 , Argument for standpunkt 1 , Kontrastord , Standpunkt 2 (motargument) , Argument for standpunkt 2 .

Reflective practice questions

  1. Which argument in this topic is strongest, and why?
  2. What is a valid counterargument, and how would you respond?
  3. How can this topic be connected to one current event?
  4. Which academic phrases can you reuse in your own writing?

Challenges: Personal and Global

Everyone encounters challenges at some point in their lives. Some are personal – a learning difficulty, a setback at school, a difficult period mentally or emotionally. Others are shared on a much larger scale: climate change, migration, social inequality, and conflict affect entire communities and societies. What matters is not whether we face challenges, but how we approach them – and whether we face them alone or together.

Personal Challenges: Turning Obstacles into Strengths

It is tempting to view personal challenges – especially those related to how we learn or function – as purely negative. But a different perspective is possible: some of the traits that make certain tasks harder can also provide genuine advantages in other areas of life.

Consider people with dyslexia, a condition that makes reading, writing, and spelling more difficult. Many people with dyslexia report that the extra effort required to process written information has trained them to think creatively and approach problems in unconventional ways. Seeing the world differently from the majority can be a real asset in fields that value innovation and lateral thinking.

Dette konseptet kalles ofte "the dyslexic advantage". …
